Who we are
Reprieve fights for people facing torture, unlawful detention and the death penalty.
Authoritarian abuses are on the rise worldwide – and we know how to fight back.
About Reprieve
Reprieve is a small team of lawyers, investigators, and campaigners. We have been fighting against extreme human rights violations since 1999. We work to end the death penalty, torture, unlawful detention, rendition, and extrajudicial execution.
This includes helping people in some of the toughest situations imaginable. For example:
a young man who was sentenced to death for attending a demonstration when he was a child
a victim of trafficking who was stripped of citizenship and abandoned in a desert prison camp
a human rights activist facing execution for their political views
We are pragmatic and strategic. When governments are on the road to reform, we partner with the officials, lawyers, and advocates seeking positive change. When governments continue to execute, torture, and illegally detain, we fight back.
Reprieve was built on a single principle –that everyone deserves justice, no matter who they are or what they did. Across the world, there are states that are increasingly placing people beyond the reach of the law.
Rights and freedoms are under threat. Access to justice is being eroded. This work has never been more urgent.
The issues we tackle
We fight for people facing extreme state abuses – and for the lasting change that protects thousands more.
End the death
penalty
We work to prevent executions, get people off death row and campaign for abolition of the death penalty. A world without capital punishment is possible.
End unlawful
detention
From CIA torture chambers to “Europe’s Guantánamo” in North East Syria, Reprieve fights for people indefinitely detained without trial.
Stop citizenship
stripping
Reprieve is fighting to abolish citizenship stripping – an extreme power where people can be stripped of fundamental rights at the stroke of a politician’s pen.
Stop the use of
torture
Reprieve fights to get justice for people have been tortured – and challenges the systems that enabled the abuse.
Our History
Over the last 25 years, we have confronted the death penalty, torture and unlawful detention across 4 continents.
