Responding to today’s speech by UK Justice Secretary Michael Gove, in which he said that the justice system fails the poorest and that he planned to “review” cuts to legal aid, Kat Craig, Reprieve’s legal director, said:

“Michael Gove’s realisation that we have a deeply unequal justice system is welcome, but unfortunately its problems are in large part due to the policies of his predecessor.  Legal aid cuts under the current and previous Governments are already badly damaging the ability of ordinary members of the public to gain access to justice.  They are also endangering the citizen’s ability to hold the state accountable for wrongdoing.  Simply keeping these cuts under review is not enough – they need to be reversed if the system is to have a chance of recovery.”
