Responding to Theresa May’s leaked letter concerning mobile phone companies and surveillance, Kat Craig, legal director at Reprieve, a charity which works on abuses connected to the ‘war on terror’ said:

“As usual, the Government is putting the cart before the horse when it comes to surveillance.  They have done nothing to remedy the feeble oversight of our intelligence services which has left the public with so little faith in these institutions.  Worse still, no steps have been taken to ensure that the information Britain collects and shares with the US is not used to kill people around the world in illegal drone strikes, or target them for illegal detention and torture.  Before proposing any further expansion of surveillance, ministers must put in place concrete safeguards to address the public’s legitimate concerns.”
