Press conference announced: The return of Samantha Orobator
August 7, 2009
PRESS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED:
1pm, Friday 7th August 2009
Freshfields Northcliffe House
28 Tudor St, London EC4Y 0AY
Reprieve will hold a press conference regarding Samantha Orobator, the 20 year old British woman who faced the death penalty in Laos, upon her return to the UK.
Speakers: Clive Stafford Smith OBE, Sarah Ludford MEP, Jane Orobator (Samantha’s mother), Ronke Oseni (Samantha’s friend); statements from Samantha.
Samantha was arrested in Wattay Airport, held without a lawyer for many months and, after what was essentially a show trial, was sentenced to life in prison. She returns to the UK thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding and Prisoner Transfer Agreement (PTA) negotiated by the Lao and UK governments. Under the PTA, Samantha is required to go directly to prison, and she faces giving birth there in September.
