Our Head of Unlawful Detentions, Naima Sakande, was invited to come down to Soho Radio’s flagship broadcasting studio on Carnaby Street to talk all things citizenship.
She was there to discuss our report ‘Stripped’, which we released in partnership with the Runnymede Trust in 2025, and which delves into the thorny issue of UK citizenship stripping laws, and just how devastating – and impossible to fight – losing your citizenship can be.
Nearly all that’s needed for someone to be eligible to lose their citizenship is for the Home Secretary to decide that doing so would be ‘conducive to the public good’. Naima spoke to resident DJ Sarah Love about the real danger that UK citizenship stripping laws pose to the 9 million people in the UK who have links to another country:
“I’d invite your listeners to ask themselves – have they ever attended a protest… have they ever posted something online that the government might not like? We’ve got to ask ourselves why we’ve still got this power on the books”
But that isn’t even the most shocking part. Our report into the practise with the Runnymede Trust found that people of colour in the UK are 12 times more likely to be at risk of losing their citizenship. This means a two-tier system – one for people who are British, and one for people whose citizenship is less guaranteed. They’re Brit-ish.
