This Sunday, Reprieve’s BBC Radio 4 Appeal airs – and we’re honoured to have actor and long-time Reprieve supporter Adjoa Andoh as our voice.
Adjoa has championed Reprieve’s work for over a decade. In the appeal, she tells the story of Ishmael Gome, a man who spent ten years on death row in Malawi for a crime he didn’t commit.
Then Ishmael first met Reprieve’s lawyers, he told them: “I am looking into my grave, every day.“
Reprieve took on Ishmael’s case and fought to get him free. When he was freed, he said returning to his village felt like being born again.
Ishmael isn’t alone. Since 2014, Reprieve and partners in Malawi have fought for nearly 200 people facing execution. One by one, we successfully fought their cases and the majority are now home.
As Adjoa puts it: “I’ve supported Reprieve for the last ten years because they are magnificent at fighting for people on death row around the world.”
