Reprieve secured an exclusive with new media outlet, Zeteo UK, on our citizenship stripping work – and the concerning response we received from government when we highlighted the racist impact of their laws.
In early 2026, following the publication of our report with the Runnymede Trust into the terrifying reality of citizenship stripping powers in the UK, we wrote to the government to let them know that our research had found that People of Colour in the UK were 12 times more vulnerable to losing their citizenship than their white neighbours. In response, we got a short letter from the Home Office, acknowledging that the policy disproportionately impacted “certain minorities”, but saying that this was acceptable to the government, and that British citizenship is “a privilege, not a right”.
Our Chief Executive, Maya Foa, was interviewed by Zeteo UK’s Westminster editor, Shehab Khan, on the shocking response, and on the risk that the concentration of these extreme powers might pose to British citizens now, and in the future.
