A British father who was arrested on his way back to the UK from a family holiday in Saudi Arabia will be sentenced in April, reports the Financial Times.
Ahmed Al-Doush’s lawyers believe he is being sentenced under terrorism and anti-cyber crime laws for a deleted social media post and perceived association with a Saudi dissident, but the details are unclear because they have not seen any documentation. He is at risk of the death penalty in the midst of a soaring execution crisis in the Kingdom.
Ahmed’s detention comes as the Kingdom is pushing an economic transformation plan in which it hopes tourism will increase. Reprieve’s head of MENA Jeed Basyouni told the FT: “incidents like this suggest it is simply not safe for Britons to travel to Saudi Arabia.”
