Becoming a Reprieve Fellow in London

Fellowships at Reprieve (1 year)

For law students, Reprieve offers 12-month fellowships at our London office for those who have secured external funding. These are particularly suitable for law students from the USA.

During this time, fellows will lead a particular legal, political and activist strand of Reprieve’s work under the supervision of a Reprieve Director or Deputy Director. Our current fellows are leading on the Stop the Lethal Injection Project, Guantanamo litigation and litigation before UK courts on behalf of torture and rendition victims. The area of work to which a fellow is assigned will depend on the location and the student’s preference for the different areas of Reprieve’s work. Fellows are also welcome to propose new projects to Reprieve, which they can then lead during their fellowship.

As well as gaining experience of what it is like to be part of a small human rights organisation, fellows will develop invaluable legal and investigative skills during their year with Reprieve. These might include skills in legal research, drafting, dispute resolution, interviewing and communicating as an advocate. As part of a small organisation, fellows will be exposed to multiple areas of work and expected to use all the tools in their tool boxes.

Applying for a Fellowship

To apply for a fellowship, students should submit the dates you are interested in a fellowship, along with their CV, a completed application form and information of the funding you have, or are hoping to, secure to applications@reprieve.org.uk

Reprieve is happy to assist with any applications for funding that students wish to submit and provide details of some of the funding opportunities offered by universities. Unfortunately, Reprieve does not have the funds to offer paid fellowships. Fellows are reimbursed up to a daily limit for their local travel expenses and lunch. Please inform us in your application if you require our assistance with funding applications to other organisations or trusts.

Once accepted for a fellowship, Reprieve is also able to sponsor a Tier 5 Visa for eligible fellows who do not reside in the UK or have British nationality. Please inform us in your application if you will require sponsorship.  When considering your fellowship dates, it is worth giving yourself time for your visa application to be processed. As guidance, currently 100% of US applications are processed in 60 days and 97% of US applications are processed in 10 days.
