Becoming a Reprieve Volunteer in London

Volunteers in Reprieve’s London office are involved in all aspects of our work and contribute enormously to keeping the office running and ensuring we do the best for our clients. Volunteering at Reprieve might involve helping to manage client case-files, research and investigation, answering phones and dealing with post, keeping our database up to date, working on press and website development, assisting with events or any one of a huge variety of other tasks.

At the moment we only offer placements to those who can come into the office. We’ve found that this works best for us and for the volunteer. We ask that volunteers be able to give a minimum time commitment of three days per week for three months. If you’re unable to meet these time commitment then please consider adding your details to our skills bank instead.

Because we receive a very substantial number of enquiries from prospective volunteers, and have limited office space, we recruit competitively for specific vacancies rather than accepting speculative applications. All new vacancies are advertised on this page, and via our volunteer recruitment mailing list (details for both of these are below).

Volunteers work within Reprieve’s Casework Team or Reprieve’s Operation Team which includes Operations, Communications and Development and Outreach.

Reprieve’s Casework team assists prisoners facing the death penalty all over the world. The team also represents clients held in America’s infamous prisons including Guantánamo Bay, as well as working on the issue of CIA-led drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen. We actively seek out victims of the ‘war on terror’, secret prisons and new developments in the conduct relating to the treatment of detainees held in the name of ‘war on terror’. Volunteers have varied roles which include case management, conducting factual and legal research, drafting correspondence and legal documents where appropriate, and working with our lawyers and investigators to find, develop and drive forward cases.

The Operations, Communications, and Development and Outreach Teams handle media relations and communications, fundraising and development, and the general management of the office. Volunteers tend to perform a wide range of tasks, including helping to manage Reprieve’s website and social networking profiles, helping to organize press conferences, writing reports and applications for funding, assisting with public appeals, research, data entry and donor administration.
