Medics Accused of Infecting Children with HIV released
24.07.07
The Bulgarian government welcomed the return of six medics today who were imprisoned in Libya for eight years. The medics, who were accused of purposely infecting children with the HIV virus, recently had their original sentences of death commuted to life imprisonment and most saw this as a sign of their imminent release. The medics have always pleaded their innocence, contending that confessions were torture induced.
Scientists and medical officials agree that the infection had spread before the medics arrived and that the arrests were likely made in an attempt to disguise the poor conditions of Libyan health facilities. Bulgaria's President Parvanov pardoned all six saying, “The dramatic case with the sentenced innocent Bulgarian citizens is at its end. We are still sympathetic with the other tragedy - the one of the infected Libyan children and their families.”
